Keeping your ThinkPad
Congratulations graduate!
You may keep your ThinkPad, however, due to software licensing restrictions no software originally provided on the ThinkPad standard load will transfer to you. You must obtain legally licensed software for the ThinkPad. Failure to complete this process no later than the last day of your academic term, may result in the loss of functionality of the operating system and software, and the loss of your data.
If you have questions concerning any of this information, please contact the Information Systems Service Desk at help@wfu.edu or by calling 336-758-4357 (HELP).
Before you begin
You will need:
- an external hard drive or USB flash drive for data backup
- access to a printer or a second computer in order to view required instructions
- For the T430s only – an additional external hard drive or USB flash drive (16GB or larger) for Windows software
Download and install legally licensed software
Click the link that corresponds with the model of your ThinkPad. If you are unsure what model ThinkPad you have, you can look for the model next to the right-side hinge below the screen. You will be prompted to enter your Wake Forest University username and password.
Note: the download requires approximately 30 gigabytes of free storage space on the ThinkPad hard drive. Note the file download will take significantly longer compared to an on-campus download.
For the X1 Carbon or Yoga
Follow the instructions here to download the X1 Carbon/Yoga software.
It may be helpful to print the instructions or view them on another computer before starting the download.
For the T430s
Follow the instructions here to download the ThinkPad T430s software.
It may be helpful to open the “Instructions” file after you click the above link and either download the instructions to another computer or print them for your reference during the re-image process. Then download the software.
