Meet the 2019 T-CART Recipients at TechX

We are excited to have the five 2019 T-CART recipients participating at TechX! Drop by their tables to learn more about what they did with their grants and to see if a T-CART grant might be right for you.

T-CART includes two annual grants: the Summer Technology Exploration Program (STEP) grants, and the Summer WakerSpace Faculty Fellow grants, which are awarded to Faculty to explore technology that exists in the new WakerSpace. Both grants provide funding for faculty summer projects to explore creative ways of enhancing teaching and scholarly work.

Documentary Shorts  – (STEP recipient)

Learn how students are producing documentary shorts about a local farm, food industry, chocolate factory, and a winery in Professor Miller’s course, Global Village Living and Learning Community. By utilizing a recorded narration, field interviews, and photographs, students express their perspective of the food culture in the community. Mobile devices such as digital recorders and smartphones are used to capture the story and Adobe Rush editing software interweaves and edits the multimodal elements.

Video Mini-Lectures for Just-in-Time Teaching (STEP recipient)

Interested in replacing your mini lectures with short videos? Associate Professor T.H.M. Gellar-Goad created 2–3-minute videos on a range of topics from Ancient Greece and Rome. The videos will be assigned as part of a larger homework project, linked on a “would you like to know more?” page in the Learning Management System (LMS), and used in class as a springboard for small-group discussions and exploration.

Making Mathematics: A Course (WakerSpace Fellow)

Many students benefit from having hands-on models in discovering mathematics. Moreover, student makers can benefit from understanding the mathematics behind the technologies they are using to construct objects. This project aims to leverage the new maker space to improve mathematical education on campus, and to leverage mathematical expertise to improve understanding of the maker space equipment. The course will be offered in Summer 1 2020.

Mobile Podcast Station (WakerSpace Fellow)

Wake Forest students are in need of a high-quality mobile recording station to create their podcasts and audio stories. The Podcaster — incorporating a mixer and three microphones, along with cables, mic stands and voice filters — is small, compact, and easy to use. It allows students to create clear and evocative interviews with multiple participants. It can be conducted in various classrooms and university spaces, as well as taken on the road. Along with recording interviews from multiple participants, it facilitates the recording of voice over, lectures and interviews for use in podcasts, documentary videos, and websites.

The Mobile Podcasting Station helps students engage with new technologies as a way to enhance their intellectual development, capture observations of the world, and transmit a variety of voices. Stop by and see how it all works.

A Study of AI and Generative Film Scores (WakerSpace Fellow)

Using both artificial intelligence as well as generative music machines, this demonstration includes a series of interactive, hands-on devices (keyboard, modular synth, laptop, and other things) that can be used to create on the spot soundtracks to video running on the tablet.  Stop by and learn how Professor Hood is mastering the application of AI composition and sound design hardware and software both in his teaching and creative work for film, dance, and theater.
